In 1928 San Francisco, lesbian couple Florence and Lucille prepare to host a Halloween party. Florence is an up-and-coming jazz singer, and she is starting to get her big break. She feels tied down by her girlfriend, Lucille, due to her young age and immaturity. Lucille is unwilling to let go of the relationship, despite its imperfections. The two argue throughout the evening, trying to save face for most of the night until Florence’s secret is revealed accidentally by one of their friends, Bernard. Both of their frustrations with each other and the state of their partnership boils over as Lucille finds out that Florence plans to take a job in New York City, moving away from her and not telling Lucille.
